Three Christians with non Christian spouses share their experience

This past week Pastor Bland gave an illustration to demonstrate an example of community helping us through temptation. In it he mentioned how a woman in his Community Group was dating a non-Christian, that things had gotten physical, and that the community group had supported this woman in ending the relationship. After discussing the sermon together, we realized that there was the possibility that illustration could have been received as regarding dating a non-Christian as an act of sin. To clarify, the sin and the temptation in this particular situation was that the relationship had crossed boundaries for physical intimacy that we believe are only reserved for within the bonds of marriage. It was not the relationship itself. We do not believe that a relationship with an unbeliever is inherently sinful, since the Bible does not have a specific prohibition on this. However, all of the pastors do agree that for a professing Christian, dating someone who is not also following Christ is an unwise decision.

I did not know what I was doing at the time—I simply followed my mother and held joss sticks to pray. Thankfully, my grandmother showed me the way. Every night without fail, she would teach me how to pray to Jesus.

5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Date a Nonbeliever (Besides the Obvious)

In one of my calculus classes, I met a young man I’ll call him Jeremy who offered to help me on a project. At the end of the term, I gave him a Christmas card. To my surprise, he e-mailed me and told me I could e-mail. I did e-mail him, and we continued to e-mail for almost five months before we had another class together. During that time, we asked each other numerous questions and told each other a lot or what I thought was a lot about each other — our likes, dislikes, opinions, etc.

The reason isn’t because it’s a stimulating academic topic, but because many Christians are dating, or potentially will date, non-Christians.

Marriage — and dating on that trajectory — cannot be the beautiful if the person is a believer or an unbeliever, Christian or non-Christian.

But the Bible has plenty to say about relationships, love, and lifestyle. All that stuff should happen before the dating stage. That explains why being friends first is essential. Whether you like it or not, when you enter into a dating relationship, you are opening your heart to someone else with the possibility of getting hurt. I believe the dating relationship should be entered into with the intent of marriage.

It may be an old fashioned way of dating but it is a wise way to consider. This speaks about being attracted to the person. Can you engage in meaningful, truthful, vulnerable conversation with them about the things that matter most?

Can I Date an Unbeliever?

In this article we will discuss how dating a non-Christian affects us spiritually. It is most important to look at this topic with the following mindset: is my relationship acceptable and pleasing to our Father in heaven? The whole reason and purpose for dating should be to one day be joined by our heavenly Father in marriage. Unfortunately, our society has twisted the meaning of dating and the purpose behind it. Most of us have been affected by a relationship between a believer and an unbeliever.

My parents raised me with the mindset of only dating and marrying someone who is a Christian.

A personal testimony of trying by Jessica Santosa – “Don’t date an unbeliever.” Preachers at church, trusted friends and mentors would tell me this daily.

Of course, from Mr A to E, common denominators were obvious. They were each confident in their pursuit, able to ask me out on pleasant dates, make me laugh, and…did not subscribe their hearts to a committed relationship with Jesus. They barely know how to budget. While I harp on all the time about starting with a strong friendship, advocating a slow pace at the beginning of meeting new singles, Mr E was the epitome of slow-build trust, which resulted in slow-burn care and genuine, informed interest about the other.

Our platonic friendship was comfortable for 12 months, where I would go to speaking conferences with him in no make-up, glasses and sometimes even my pyjama bottoms. And after months of hanging out and talking about other love interests on the radar, he became one of my closest friends. I could call him after a stressful day at work and vent to him for hours, where he would summarise every word I said in a few sentences, bringing me to revelations, not unlike the magical skills of a trained counsellor.
