Ultrasound scans during pregnancy

Obstetric ultrasound, also known as prenatal or pregnancy ultrasound, uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of a developing embryo or fetus. Your doctor will use information from obstetric ultrasounds to track pregnancy progress, gestational age and help predict delivery dates. During an obstetric ultrasound, you will be on a bed, usually on your back. You may be asked to change position during your scan.

Urgent cases may still be performed earlier, please discuss this with your referring doctor. Your ultrasound may be performed transabdominally or transvaginally. Transvaginal ultrasound involves placing a thin transducer slightly thicker than a tampon into the vagina. The transvaginal ultrasound can offer extra detail to the examination as it allows the ultrasound probe to come into close proximity to the uterus womb.

A transvaginal scan is optional for all patients and it is your decision whether to proceed with that part of the examination.

Dating Scan

This scan will be your first glimpse at your developing baby and we can accurately give you your due date of your baby. Measurements are taken such that the dates of the pregnancy can be confirmed or determined. Other information obtained includes whether the pregnancy is in the uterus or outside the uterus an ectopic pregnancy , how many embryos there are, and whether there are any complications surrounding the pregnancy at this early stage.

2D EARLY PREGNANCY SCANS

A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures. Dating scans are usually recommended if there is doubt about the validity of the last menstrual period. By 6 to 7 weeks gestation the fetus is clearly seen on trans-vaginal ultrasound and the heart beat can be seen at this early stage 90 to beats per minute under 6 to 7 weeks, then to beats per minute as the baby matures.

Ultrasounds performed during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy are generally within 3 – 5 days of accuracy.
